Micronclean Advances Fully Electric Net-Zero Cleanroom Laundry Project in the UK

Date:2026-05-11

UK-based cleanroom specialist Micronclean is investing £20 million to develop what is expected to become the world’s first “operationally net-zero” cleanroom laundry facility, attracting strong attention from the global cleanroom and sustainable manufacturing industries.

Located in Skegness, UK, the 20-acre development is the first phase of Micronclean’s long-term campus expansion plan. The project will include a GMP Grade B cleanroom laundry, medical device manufacturing facilities, cleanroom consumables production areas, a modern warehouse, and a new headquarters. Operations are expected to begin in 2028.

Unlike traditional cleanroom laundries that rely heavily on natural gas boilers and steam systems, Micronclean plans to eliminate gas entirely and move toward a fully electrified operating model powered by solar energy, REGO-certified renewable electricity, and advanced energy management systems.

The company is also developing next-generation cooling solutions aimed at significantly reducing energy consumption in cleanroom HVACR systems. According to the project team, the facility may challenge conventional cleanroom HVACR design concepts through more efficient cooling strategies and intelligent plant monitoring technologies.

Water sustainability is another major focus. Micronclean’s Bangalore facility in India already achieves 90% water recycling, and the new UK project is expected to further enhance water recovery and reuse technologies for sustainable cleanroom operations.

Micronclean believes sustainability will become a key competitive factor for businesses over the next 10–30 years. The project is not simply a factory upgrade, but a complete rethinking of how future cleanroom laundries should operate in terms of energy, cooling, water management, and digital optimization.

As global semiconductor, pharmaceutical, medical device, and high-tech manufacturing industries continue to expand, the cleanroom sector is rapidly moving toward low-carbon, intelligent, and energy-efficient development. This trend is expected to further drive demand across ASEAN for advanced HVACR systems, cleanroom technologies, energy-saving cooling solutions, and smart facility management.
